ABOUT A TASTE OF JAMAICA

A Taste of Jamaica is Adelaide’s only Jamaican Restaurant! It is also unique because it is not only a restaurant but so much more. Where else in Adelaide can you eat a hearty exotic meal then dance the night away.

The idea of a Jamaican restaurant in Adelaide came into existence in February 2005. At the time Danielle Mangelsdorf was running a daytime cafe, The Tea House at Goodwood. She specialized in providing a place for people to eat who had food allergies. We decided to start operating at night by selling traditional Jamaican meals. The ‘Jamaican Nights’ as they were initially called, were an instant hit, despite us starting with a minimal budget and no formal marketing or proper signage. We still have our original hand-made appliquéd ‘Jamaican Food’, which we now use as a whimsical touch for food stalls we do at Markets and Festivals such as WOMADelaide and the YHA Peace Festival.

Our initial success continued and although it took a while for the word of mouth to spread, those who came in were left with a satisfying impression. In fact, the overall response we consistently heard was “Thank goodness we now have something different to eat in Adelaide.”

At the beginning of October we changed the business image and its name to A Taste of Jamaica, in response to the increasing demand for the Jamaican food, while keeping the food allergy friendly, but not emphasizing it. This change in image corresponded with Matt Byrne Media's Adelaide premiere launching of The Full Monty in which Rohan had a featured role (as ‘Horse- the Big Black Man’). Since then we have expanded our customer base and the feedback we've received have been positive and exciting.

The recipes used are those learned from Rohan’s family. And while even the most homogeneous Jamaican can't taste the difference, a few culinary modifications have been made to make all the meals gluten free. We also offer vegetarian and vegan meals and we use no nuts in our restaurant. We particularly pride ourselves on being able to cater to many people with varying food allergies.

We noticed that the old Tandanya café was up for lease in April and started serious negotiations to take over the premises a month later.  A formal lease arrangement was agreed to in late July and we subsequently moved in at the beginning of August.
